Let’s look at some teams which fit the description above in the leagues I know best. Looking in England, Leicester City, Blackpool and both Sheffield clubs have decent wage and transfer budgets with high potential youths who you will be able to gradually develop into the squad.
Arsenal, obviously have good youths to develop as do Spurs if you want decent youth with some money to spend as well. Everton provide a good side on a budget, with the right signings you can push them into challenge for the title. Looking further afield –
Atletico Madrid provide a good long term challenge to try and break the dominance of the two big clubs. Build your side around Falcao would be my suggestion. NOTE: All transfer and wage budgets and board difficulty can be changed to slightly alter budgets either to your advantage or against.
If you choose a big team with a big budget the chances are you can buy other teams youngsters and the need to build a squad from scratch won’t be necessary. This will mean the youngsters you promote will never be good enough to get involved and get the experience they need to improve.
The ideal combination, for me, is to combine a decent budget with high potential youths and a medium/large squad. I have read that people don’t like starting with large squads as their youths don’t get the chance to flourish. This confuses me because if there is a large squad at your club, decide who isn’t going to be playing a part in your plans and get them placed on the transfer list to make some extra funds available.
